In Person CPE Training

CPE Training

Welcome to the CPE In Person Training Program, held at Kaiser Hospitals in Portland, Oregon. Importantly, CPE Trainees are not salaried or benefited employees of Kaiser Permanente, but are listed under Kaiser's volunteer program. This innovative program offers a part-time, on-site learning platform designed to accommodate a diverse range of individuals. No matter your current employment status, education level, cultural background, sexual orientation, race, ethnicity, language, or spirituality, our program is thoughtfully structured to meet your needs and enrich your understanding of spiritual care. The program is available in three extended units throughout the year, providing a comprehensive exploration of chaplain care principles and fostering the development of practical skills and theoretical understanding.

CPE Participation

Participation in the CPE Training Program demands commitment and dedication. One unit of Chaplain Professional Education  requires at least 100 hours of structured education and up to 300 hours of supervised clinical practice. To gain credit for the unit, you'll be expected to devote an average of 18 hours per week to direct ministry. Besides the regular ministry on your assigned unit, participants also take part in the 24-hour call-duty rotation on weekends and holidays, offering spiritual care in various contexts, such as trauma situations, supportive care to the dying, grief support, and more.

CPE Objectives

The objectives of the CPE Training Program are clear: We aim to assist trainees in developing a solid foundation in spiritual care skills and knowledge to minister to a wide range of patients, their families, and staff. Additionally, we strive to increase self-awareness in the art of chaplain ministry and encourage engagement in the practice and understanding of the clinical method of learning. Preparing for a vocation in professional chaplaincy is an integral part of this process. Through individual and group supervision, trainees will be encouraged to explore how their personal identity and history inform their ministry style and to develop spiritual assessments of chaplain encounters. Given the context of the hospital setting, trainees will inevitably encounter social and structural dimensions of healthcare as well as issues of economic status, race, gender, family systems, and religious diversity—all of which will provide the context and content for reflection in group and individual supervision and educational seminars.
